Poppy
The American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program is one of our most recognized and meaningful traditions. More than a flower, the red poppy is a symbol of remembrance, sacrifice, and hope. It honors the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have defended our nation while raising awareness and support for veterans, active-duty military, and their families.
The Department of Colorado is committed to promoting the Poppy Program and educating our communities about the significance and history of the memorial poppy. Every poppy distributed serves as a visible reminder of the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes and provides an opportunity to share the American Legion Auxiliary’s mission of Service Not Self.
The goals of the Poppy Program include:
- Promoting the Poppy Program and increasing awareness and support throughout Colorado.
- Educating communities about the meaning, history, and symbolism of the memorial poppy.
- Celebrating National Poppy Day® each year on the Friday before Memorial Day by encouraging everyone to wear a poppy in honor of those who served.
- Increasing the number of volunteer poppy makers within our communities to help preserve this treasured tradition.
- Supporting veterans through funds received from poppy donations, which are used in accordance with American Legion Auxiliary guidelines to assist veterans, military members, and their families.
The iconic red crepe paper poppies are lovingly assembled by veterans and volunteers, providing both meaningful therapeutic activity and an enduring symbol of remembrance. Every poppy distributed represents gratitude for the sacrifices of those who have worn our nation’s uniform.
The Poppy Program also offers many creative ways for members to share its message. Units are encouraged to incorporate poppies into educational displays, community events, memorial ceremonies, and craft projects. From handcrafted Poppy Pins to wreaths, centerpieces, decorations, and awareness campaigns, these creative projects help keep the story of the poppy alive while inspiring conversations about the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Colorado encourages every member to proudly wear a poppy, educate others about its significance, and participate in National Poppy Day® activities. Together, we ensure that the sacrifices of our veterans are never forgotten and that future generations continue to understand the enduring meaning of the red poppy.
Wear a Poppy. Remember Their Sacrifice. Honor Their Service.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
